River Kaveri which is one of the 7 sacred rivers of Sapta Sindhus of the Hindu scriptures, originated at a place is called Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri hills, at about 4,500 ft above sea level. This place is marked by a kundike from where the river emerges as a small perennial spring, but flows underground again to emerge a short distance away.

There is a shrine near the kundike and a big tank in front of it where devotees baths before offering prayers. There are 2 temples, a Shiva temple and with a rare and ancient Shiva Linga, and another temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This temple has a holy Ashwantha tree where, according to legend, the Trimurtis – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh gave darshan to sage Agastya.

A big attraction for tourists and filmdom alike is the Abbey Falls, 8 kms from Madikeri. Even during the summer there is plenty of water in these falls. The roar of the falls can be heard from the main road, from where a path goes through lovely coffee and cardamom plantations right up to them. The chirping of innumerable birds which are easier heard then seen, fill the air with sweet music. Do remember to take your binoculars and camera when you go there

Dubare :
This is mainly an elephant capturing and training camp of the Forest Department, at the edge of Dubare forest, on the bank of river Kaveri, on the Kushalnagar – Siddapur road. The largest land animal is captured here with the help of tamed elephants and local tribals – the Kurbas – and is held captive for upto 6 months in large teak wood cages.

The tamed elephants attend to various jobs during the day and in the evenings they come down to the river to bathe and to be scrubbed clean by their mahouts. Afterwards the mahout obliges eager tourists for free elephant rides within the camp. In the evenings, all the elephants are offered a special treat of ladoos made of ragi and jaggery, each no smaller than a cannon ball!

Nagarhole National Park :
The place derives its name from the winding river – Nagarhole meaning “snake river” – which flows through the park. The 640 sq km of gently undulating terrain at the foothills of the Brahmagiri hills is covered with thick tropical forest, grassy swamps and numerous rivers and streams. The park and animal life is part of the country’s first “bio-sphere reserve”.
The Forest Department conducts tours along well-defined routes for tourists, in the early mornings and evenings. One can be sure of seeing the bison, elephant, spotted deer, sambhar, barking deer, wild boar, mongoose, peakcock, jungle fowl and many other birds and animals.

It is located 8 km from the Madikeri, 122 km from Mysore, 144 km from Mangalore and 268 km from Bangalore. The river is part of the early reaches of the river Kaveri. Flow is much higher during the monsoon season. The waterfall is located between private coffee plantations with stocky coffee bushes and spice estates with trees entwined with pepper vines. A hanging bridge constructed just opposite the falls. The falls was earlier called Jessi falls, named after a British officer’s wife. However, the place was a thick jungle area back then. Years later, the waterfall was discovered by Mr. Neravanda B.Nanaiah who bought the place from the government and converted it into a coffee and spices plantation that surrounds the waterfall today.

RAJA’S SEAT (Seat of the King) is a seasonal garden of flowers and artificial fountains. It is one of the most important tourist spots in madikeri of Coorg District. It is 270 km away from Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka.

A pleasant spectacle of refreshing layers of greenery, chain of high and low-rise-mountains attired with mist, the Raja Garden is one-time-favorites of Kings of Kodagu who used to watch the setting sun, and spend time with their queens here.[1] The structure is Small Square in brick and mortar of four pillars bridged by arches, enhanced by beautiful surroundings. This lovely spot was a favorite place of recreation for the Rajas and hence was permanently associated with them. It is built on a high level ground with a commanding view of the cliffs and valleys to the west. Early in the morning as the sun is just rising in the east, the mist shrouded valley below offers a rare sight. The golden light of the setting sun is a splendor to watch. There is also an attraction of the Toy Train for children.

A fire camp is a campsite for fire fighters and support personnel. But in tour we use for enjoyment.

BHAGAMANDALA is a pilgrimage place in Kodagu district of South Indian state of Karnataka. Bhagamandala is situated on the river Kaveri in its upstream stretches. At this place, the Kaveri is joined by two tributaries, the Kannike and the mythical Sujyoti river. It is considered sacred as a river confluence (kudala or triveni sangama, in Kannada and Sanskrit respectively). Similarly the other related place is Udhaka mandala(English name: Ooty) which means land beside water body in Kannada and Sanskrit respectively. A short distance from the triveni sangama, there is a famous temple known as Sri Bhagandeshwara temple, where Bhagandeshwara (Ishwara), Subramanya,

Mahavishnu and Ganapati idols are installed. This place is also known as Bhagandeshwara Kshetra, from which the name Bhagamandala is derived. The temples in this area are built in Karavali(West Coast) style.

TALAKAVERI (Kannada: ತಲಕಾವೇರಿ), is the place that is generally considered to be the source of the river Kaveri. It is located by Brahmagiri hill (not to be confused with the Brahmagiri range further south) near Bhagamandala in Kodagu district, Karnataka, 1,276 m. above sea level. However, there is not a permanent visible flow from this place to the main rivercourse except during the rainy season.

A tank or kundike has been erected on a hillside by kodavas, at the place that is said to be the origin. It is also marked by a small temple, and the area is frequented by pilgrims mainly it is the worship place of kodavas. The river originates as a spring feeding this tank, which is considered to be a holy place to bathe on special days. The waters are then said to flow underground to emerge as the Kaveri river some distance away. The temple has been renovated extensively by the state government recently [2007].

FROM BANGALORE OR MYSORE TO KODACHADRI – KOLLUR- UDUPI TOUR PACKAGE

KODACHADRI – KOLLUR- UDUPI

UDUPI SRI KRISHNA MATHA (Kannada:ಉಡುಪಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಮಠ) is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to god Krishna and Dvaita Matha located in the city of Udupi in Karnataka, India.

The matha area resembles a living ashram, a holy place for daily devotion and living. Surrounding the Sri Krishna Matha are several temples namely the Udupi Anantheshwara Temple which is over a 1,000 years old.

Men: Traditional Mundu, Pants and Shirt Allowed. Lungi not allowed inside Sanctum Sanctorium.

Women: Saree, Set Mundu, Salwar Kameez, Skirts and Blouse allowed

The Krishna Matha was founded by the Vaishnavite saint Jagadguru Shri Madhwacharya in the 13th century. He was the founder of the Dvaita school of Vedanta. It is believed that Madhwacharya found the murti of Sri Krishna in a large ball of gopichandana. As told by Sri Madhwacharya, in his Tantrasara Sangraha, the murti is placed Pashchimabhimukha. All the other murtis in other Ashta mutts are facing Western side as well. Once Kanakadasa, a pious worshipper and devotee of Lord Krishna, was staying in a makeshift hermitage in front of Krishna mutt. Despite being an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna, he was not allowed to enter the temple as he was an untouchable. However, pleased with his devoutness, the idol facing the direction of east turned to west and there was a crack in the wall wide enough for Kanakadasa to have darshana of the murti. Even today the devotees worship Lord Krishna through this window. It is known as Kanakanakhindi, and is decorated by an arch named after him. A statue has also been erected. A similar window covers the immediate front of the murti and is called Navagraha kindi. It is often mistaken to be Kanakana kindi.

The temple opens by 5.30 in the morning. The unique feature of the temple is that the deity is worshipped through the silver-plated window with nine holes (Navagraha kindi). The temple also offers prasadam (lunch) in the noon.

MARY’S ISLANDS, also known asCoconut Islandand Thonsepar, are a set of four small islands in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Malpe in Udupi, Karnataka, India. They are known for their distinctive geological formation of columnar basaltic lava (pictured).

Scientific studies indicate that the basalt of the St. Mary’s Islands was formed by sub-aerial sub volcanic activity, because at that time Madagascar was attached to India. The rifting of Madagascar took place around 88 million years ago.

The islands form one of the four geological monuments in Karnataka state, one of the 26 Geological Monuments of India declared by the Geological Survey of India in 2001.

According to folk legend, in the year 1498, Vasco da Gama landed at St. Mary’s Islands on his journey from Portugal, fixed a cross on the island and named one of these islands, O Padrão de Santa Maria, as a dedication to Mother Mary, before proceeding to Kozhikode in Kerala. It is from this name that the islands got their current name.

MALPE (Tulu: ಮಲ್ಪೆ) is a natural port about six kilometres to the west of Udupi, Karnataka, India. An important port and fishing harbour on the Karnataka coast. It is a suburb in Udupi city. Malpe and the Mogaveera go together. Malpe is a hub of Mogaveera population. Inhabitant for the millionaire businessmen of Mogaveera community. Tulu, Kannada and Konkani are spoken here.[1] first Indian beach with 24/7 Wi-Fi.

The largest industry in Malpe is fisheries. Malpe is also known as the natural port and the largest port in Karnataka. A considerable number of the population is engaged in fishing and in fish industries. Tile-manufacturing is another thriving industry in Malpe, as is the coconut industry. It is also known for the TEBMA ship building company.

ANEGUDDE village is located at a distance of 9 km south of Kundapura, in Udupi District. Anegudde is also popularly called as Kumbashi. The name Kumbhashi is said to be derived from demon Kumbhasura. According to the history, when drought hit this area, Sage Agasthya performed penance to appease the Varuna, the Rain God. During the penance, demon Kumbhasura started troubling the sages. Bheemasena gets weapon from Lord Ganesha to kill Kumbahasura and assassinate him at this place. Anegudde is rewarded one of the seven ‘Mukti Sthalas’ of Karnataka (Parashurama kshetra). The temple at Anegudde is dedicated to Lord Vinayaka (Ganesha). The KOLLUR MOOKAMBIKA TEMPLE/ ಕೊಲ್ಲೂರು ಮೂಕಾಂಬಿಕಾ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ at Kollur, Udupi District in the state of Karnataka, India, is a Hindu temple dedicated to mother Durga devi or Saraswati known as Mookambika Devi. Mookambika is Shakthi devi, the supreme mother goddess in Hinduism. She is worshipped in three different forms such as Maha Kali (goddess of power) in the morning, Maha Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) in the noon and Maha Saraswati (goddess of knowledge) in the evening. There are bus services from Udupi and Mangalore to Kollur at regular interval.

The establishment of the Mookambika temple is attributed to the Supreme, Lord Parameshwara, rather than to an individual person. Historically, the temple is estimated to be at least 1200 years old and is mentioned in conjunction with King Halugallu Veera Sangayya who installed an idol there.

HAMPI, A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE, IS KNOWN FOR ITS MAGNIFICENT TEMPLES.

HAMPI, A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE, IS KNOWN FOR ITS MAGNIFICENT TEMPLES.

VIJAYA VITTALA TEMPLE: As the epicenter of Hampi’s attractions, Vijaya Vittala Temple is the most extravagant architectural showpiece of Hampi. No amount of words can explain this spectacle. The temple is built in the form of a sprawling campus with compound wall and gateway towers. There are many halls, pavilions and temples located inside this campus.

Vittala, after whom the temple is known, is a form of lord Vishnu. This aspect of Vishnu was worshiped in this part of the country as their cult deity by the cattle herds (see Gods of Hampi).

The temple was originally built in the 15th century AD. Many successive kings have enhanced the temple campus during their regimes to the present form. You can even see the remains of a township called Vittalapura that existed around this temple complex. The highlight of Vittala temple is its impressive pillared halls and the stone chariot. The halls are carved with an overwhelming array of sculptures on the giant granite pillars. The stone chariot located inside the campus is almost an iconic structure of Hampi.

KADALEKALU GANESHA is one of the largest statues of Lord Ganesha that exists in the southern part of India. The shrine housing the statue of Kadalekalu Ganesha is situated on the slope of the Hemakuta Hill in Hampi. It is a remarkable monolithic statue and one of the most popular tourist sites in Hampi.

SASIVEKALU GANESHA One such fine specimen is Sasivekalu Ganesha temple. Sasivekalu Ganesha Temple is a huge statue of Lord Ganesha, carved out of a single block of rock. It is one of the major landmarks in Hampi. Sasivekalu Ganesha is about 8 feet (2.5 metres) tall.

DASARA DIBBA This is the tallest structure in this area and hence the first thing you would notice as you enter the Royal Enclosure. From a distance this looks like an ordinary elevated square stage. As you go close, the details emerge. The whole structure is made as a giant square structure in three layers. There are mainly two stairways to reach the top. The front one (east facing) is highly decorated on either sides with carvings of elephants, horses and a host of other things. On the top there is nothing special to see except the great views on the campus around it. At the back of the platform a twin staircase is located. Probably this was used as a service staircase during the ceremonies. Generally one climbs up through the front stair & get down through the rear, though there are no restrictions.

QUEEN’S BATH was a royal bath constructed for the kings and wives to take bath and is located in Hampi. Basically, it is a rectangular building, which has a long veranda inside that leads to a square tank of 6 feet depth from all sides. During the Kings reign, water in the tank is believed to be filled with perfumes and fragrance flowers for the royal bath.

The architecture resembles an Indo-Saracenic style and looks more like Islamic style than the Hindu style. There is a pond that encircles the building, which lies outside the Queen’s bath. The building has a crude design that prevents any intruders from walking into the place where the royal women take their bath. Now, one can find a small garden at Queen’s Bath, which is made just in front of the bath. It is a favorite spot for the local picnics groups. Admission is free & photography is also allowed.

Virupaksha Temple is located in Hampi  350 km from Bangalore, in the state of Karnataka. It is part of the Group of Monuments at Hampi, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Virupaksha is a form of Shiva and has other temples dedicated to him, notably at the Group of Monuments at Pattadakal, another World Heritage Site. The temple was built by Lakkana Dandesha, a chieftain under the ruler Deva Raya II of the Vijayanagara Empire.

ELEPHANT STABLE One among the few least destroyed structures in Hampi, Elephant Stable is a major tourist attraction. This long building with a row of domed chambers was used to ‘park’ the royal elephants. There are 11 domed tall chambers; some of them are inter- connected. The center one is specially decorated and big. Probably the musicians and the associated band troupes had been using this during ceremonies involving elephant processions.

LOTUS PALACE seems to occupy a distinguished position. This distinguished structure forms a part of the Zenana Mahal that served as a secluded area for the women folks of the royal families of Viyajnagara Empire. One stunning feature of Lotus Palace is that it is one of those edifices of Hampi that remained undamaged during the siege of the city.
As the name suggests, the mustard coloured domed structure is designed in the form of a lotus bud. From foreigners to domestic tourists, all on their visit to Lotus Mahal are left in a state of awe by its lotus petal- shaped archways and lotus like pyramidal flowers. Few captivating sites of Lotus Mahal are:

  • a balance between Indian and Islamic style of architecture,
  • watch towers, and
  • a splendid use of lime mortar and brick made composition.

Lotus Mahal looks utterly spectacular under an illuminated sky at night. Its large lawn layered by green velvety grass give space to photograph some matchless brilliance of Hampi’s ruined stories.

STEPPED TANK is located in Durbar Area in Royal enclosure of Hampi. This famous Stepped Tank was excavated by Archaeological Survey of India during 1980-1983. This tank is very ornate and one of the most beautiful monuments of Hampi.ThE Stepped Tank is constructed using finely finished blocks of black stones. This Tank was probably used by the royals for religious purpose. The beautiful tank is about 22 square meters and about 7 meters deep. It has five distinct tiers, each fitted with steps set in a pleasing pattern. The marks on the tank and individual blocks indicate the direction of flow of water. The water to this tank was drawn through the intelligently designed stone channels which are well preserved till date.

STONE CHARIOT“, as it is often referred is the flagship tourist attraction of Hampi. This is not a chariot, as the name suggests, rather a shrine built like a chariot. This is located inside the Vittala Temple campus. You would be visiting the Stone Chariot as part of your Vittala Temple tour.

In mythology Lord Vittala is an aspect of Lord Vishnu (See Gods of Hampi and Mythology of Hampi). Garuda (lord of eagles) is the vehicle (mount) of Lord Vishnu. The Stone Chariot once contained the icon on Garuda, though the shrine is empty now. This shrine is in the axis of the massive Vittala Temple and faces the sanctum of Vittala Temple.

It may appear to you (and sometimes even referred to) as a monolithic structure. In reality this stone shrine was built with many giant granite blocks. The joints are smartly hidden in the carvings and other decorative features that adorn the Stone Chariot.

MUSICAL STONE PILLARS: In Vithala temple in Hampi, Karnataka, there are cluster of 56 musical pillars located near the mahamandapam. These musical pillars are tapping pillar type. When tapped on them they produce sounds of various musical Instruments. The detailed and an excellent survey of musical pillars and associated musical instruments in Vitthala temple, Hampi, Karnataka, is given in a paper by Kumar etal. There, some of the pillars will produce sounds of Saptaswara (seven notes) and following instruments such as Panchatala (five tones), Jaltarang (water instrument), Tabla, Veena, Mridanga, Ghatam, Damaru, Kerala Mridangam (all are percussion instruments), Ghanta (bell) and Shankha (conch-shell).

TUNGABHADRA DAM is constructed across the Tungabhadra River, a tributary of the Krishna River. The dam is near the town of Hospet in Karnataka. It is a multipurpose dam serving irrigation, electricity generation, flood control, etc. This is a joint project of erstwhile Hyderabad state and erstwhile Madras Presidency when the construction was started; later it became a joint project of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh after its completion in 1953. The main architect of the dam was Dr Thirumala Iyengar, an engineer from Madras. The dam creates the biggest reservoir on the Tungabhadra River with 101 tm cft of gross storage capacity at full reservoir level (FRL) 498 m MSL, and water spread area of 378 square kilometres. The dam is 49.39 meters high above its deepest foundation.
